The Wind Phone: A Quiet Place to Speak from the Heart

A New Bereavement Support Service at Hughes Funeral Directors

At Hughes Funeral Directors, we understand that saying goodbye doesn't always mean the conversations have to end.

Grief is deeply personal, and for many people there are still words left unsaid, memories they wish to revisit, or moments they simply want to share with someone they love and miss.

That is why we are proud to introduce The Wind Phone — a peaceful and private space within our funeral home where anyone is welcome to sit quietly, lift the receiver, and speak from the heart.

Whether you wish to tell someone about your day, celebrate a special milestone, say the words you never had the chance to say, or simply spend a few moments remembering them, our Wind Phone is here for you.

What Is a Wind Phone?

The idea of the Wind Phone began in Japan following the devastating 2011 tsunami, when a gentleman named Itaru Sasaki installed an old disconnected telephone in his garden. He believed that although the phone wasn't connected to anyone, speaking into it helped carry his thoughts "on the wind" to those he had lost.

Since then, Wind Phones have appeared around the world, offering comfort to people living with grief and bereavement.

Whilst the telephone is not connected to a telephone line, it provides something many people find incredibly valuable — a safe place to express emotions, remember loved ones and continue a personal connection in their own way.

A Safe Space for Reflection

Our Wind Phone is available to anyone in the community.

You do not have to have arranged a funeral through Hughes Funeral Directors to use it.

Whether you have recently experienced bereavement or lost someone many years ago, you are welcome to visit.

Some people choose to speak openly.

Others simply sit quietly.

There is no right or wrong way.

Everyone grieves differently, and this space has been created with kindness, understanding and privacy at its heart.

Supporting Families Beyond the Funeral

At Hughes Funeral Directors, we believe our role extends far beyond arranging funerals.

Supporting families through grief is an important part of what we do.

Alongside initiatives such as our Post Box to Heaven, Memorial Christmas Tree, Annual Christmas Memorial Service, and ongoing bereavement support, the Wind Phone offers another gentle way for people to remember those they love.

Sometimes the smallest moments bring the greatest comfort.
